4 Practical Tips: Toner

By Eric Azulay

When toner cartridges go empty, you can choose to recycle them by dropping them off at a collection point. At this point, they get sold to manufacturers who will turn them back into a new cartridge. There are quite a few steps to the recycling process for toner cartridges. You will need to have the cartridges sorted by type; tested for their quality and construction; cleaned thoroughly; and finally filled back up with new toner.

This is a very environmentally friendly method of dealing with used cartridges. Studies have shown that recycling all used toner cartridges could save the disposal of billions of cartridges worldwide every single year. Because a cartridge usually takes about a decade to completely break down, this is a critical sticking point.

Right when the cartridges are collected at the collection center, they are sorted by type and quality. The sorting process will throw out any cartridges that end up being too far damaged to be used again. If it is of good quality, it can be reused. The ones chosen to be reused will then get sent to the cleaning and refilling center.

Once filled in again, the cartridges again go through an inspection process to determine whether or not the final product is exactly up to the quality standards that consumers have come to expect.

The best part about this whole process is the effect it can have on the environment. By using recycled toner cartridges, you are helping to save money for yourself, save the earth's resources for others, and help keep these products out of landfills. Almost every bit of the used toner cartridges can be refashioned into the new cartridges, and this leads to incredible savings during the manufacturing process.

In an effort to increase the number of people choosing to recycle their old toner cartridges, many companies are now offering small monetary refunds for used cartridges, much like the programs to buy back soda cans or shopping bags. You may also find that companies give you credit for store purchases instead. By providing a reason for people to recycle their cartridges, the rate of success ends up being significantly higher than the more invisible manufacturers, who simply rely on good will.

When you ask people why they refrain from participating in recycled cartridge programs, you'll often hear of concerns about the quality of the recycled cartridges compared to the toner cartridges produced from printer manufacturers. There will honestly be no risk to either your printing quality or your printer warranty by switching to recycled cartridges.
