The Growing Need for Travel Nurses

By John Vandergrift

For anyone who has been following the news trends these days, it may be quite alarming to see all the stories about the nursing shortage in our world. In terms of numbers and meeting demand, the level of doctors at the moment is fine; however, there are simply not enough people enrolling in nursing school to match the number of people needing care. One reason may be that nursing is an underappreciated and misunderstood field. Almost all of the primary care work that is done can be done by nurses.

Up to this point in time, the modern world has not run into the problems native to a nursing shortage, but many countries in the third world are reporting all kinds of medical care shortages. Travel nursing has been a possible solution that has led to some success. This is an effective short term method for bringing quality medical care to the countries that need it most. If you're interested in learning more about travel nursing and how it is helping our planet, read on.

Possibly inspired by the programs of the late 1960s where workers from the modern world were sent to start civic projects in developing countries, travel nursing has recently developed into a system where the modern world sends its nurses out into the world to set up clinics and administer medical care. Unlike the old social programs, nurses in travel nursing are quite well compensated for their world. Travel nurses will quickly begin setting up a medical center in the region where they have been sent, and they will work closely with the local people to make sure that everyone is involved. Once the clinic has been created, the nurses start providing medical care while also teaching local apprentices. The eventual goal with travel nursing is to teach the local people how to manage and operate their own medical center.

There are many obvious benefits that this kind of program can bring to the third world countries. First, they are able to get basic medical needs met as soon as the nurses arrive. The nurses also give the people their own clinic and medical offices. The last benefit the local people receive from a travel nurse program is that the nurses will teach some of the local people how to perform nursing tasks.

There are positive gains for the travel nurses, too, when they decide to join a program. Both people skills and nursing skills are generally improved over the course of a travel visit. The sense of achievement and joy that nurses usually feel makes the whole trip worth it.
