5 Ideas That Will Make You Think About Receptions

By Richard Bettridge

Weddings have generally throughout time been a reflection of two people's culture and religious beliefs. In the past, weddings were more of a traditional event, closely incorporating religious and cultural customs. However, today finds weddings as much about the union of two people as an expression of the personalities involved. Modern weddings are highly personalized, vibrant and individual.

Obviously, not every couple completely rejects the staples of a customary wedding, but today's culture of individualism has seen subversions of wedding traditions. There is perhaps no more visible aspect of Americans' desire to turn wedding tradition on its side than the growth of the destination wedding. A destination wedding allows couples to exercise greater control over each individual aspect over the surroundings of their celebration.

Traditionally, a common spot for a destination wedding is a beachfront resort or tropical locale. These days, destination weddings aren't limited to sandy beaches and crystal blue waters. When trying to deviate from the norm, some destination wedding-bound couples relish individualism and uniqueness - perhaps to the point of strangeness. Zoos, baseball stadiums, golf courses, plantations, and even aquariums have been the host of numerous weddings and receptions.

Abstract wedding venues have seemingly given way to inventive variations on customary wedding outfits. Although some brides-to-be would balk at wearing anything but white, more and more weddings see beautiful colored gowns of rich, pale pink, vibrant yellow, or sometimes, even black. Sometimes, the gown isn't really even a gown; brides seeking to break free from the norm have the option of choosing a short cut wedding dress. The classic look of a well-tailored suit is undeniable, but not every man wants to get married in one; be it in a suit or tux, more and more men are opting for baby blue, beige, khaki, navy or grey.

Couples can also customize their special day by spicing up the food served to their guests. Not every wedding meal has to be meat and potatoes. Some weddings project opulence, but some couples can do without the extravagance; serve your guests small plates, appetizers, finger foods, and sliders. For desert, offer the guests at your reception a choice of different sweets rather than relying on that old standby, plain wedding cake.
