What You Need to Know About Hydroponic Gardening

By Scott Urueta

The definition of hydroponic gardening comprises the process or growing different plants without any soil through a special solution. There are different kinds of systems that contribute to the efficacy of this system and that will be tackled later on but in the meantime let us address the question regarding the need to come up with this kind of complex system instead of the traditional way of growing plants through sticking a seed in the soil and eventually water it.

There are some benefits one could experience through hydroponic gardening in contrast to the traditional process. The number one benefit is that the entire system could be fully automated. Because of this system, one could easily grow plants without the need to spend too much time on various things such as applying the nutrients, lights and water pumps since the timers and computers will do the work for you. The only thing that you will be doing is to replace the water once or twice a week after setting up the system. Another advantage of this system is that you could grow plants on sand, perlite or fired clay balls. Going without any soil means that you no longer have to go through unnecessary process such as weeding and avoid pests at the same time. This is certainly a big help to people who can no longer bend over in a long period of time aside from being able to skip spraying pesticides on plants. Furthermore, hydroponic gardening consumes about 1/10th water of the usual gardening method which makes it environment friendly.

In addition to the above mentioned information, there will be significant increase in the yearly yields and help people who are situated in places with unsuitable climates to grow plants through the traditional way are all the advantages brought about by hydroponic gardening. When these two advantages are combined they will certainly contribute a lot to the society. With the help of this system, people from different places such as urban areas, arid places, mountainous and rocky places, and even from the desert could easily grow their own food.

Procedures

Hydroponic gardening has two types namely medium and solution culture. The solution type does not include a medium in order to grasp the roots of the plants and this has three sub classifications namely static, continuous and aeroponics. On the other hand, the medium type has two subcategories which are the sub and top irrigation.

Static Type of Solution Culture

In this process, the plants will be placed in a tray that will float in a container that has a solution full of various essential nutrients. In order to avoid deteriorating the roots, an aerator that is commonly used in an aquarium will be placed in the solution. Aside from that, the containers should be opaque or has a foil covering so that the growth of algae will be prevented.

Continuous Type of Solution

This literally means that the roots of the plants will be constantly irrigated with water. Furthermore, this technique also includes using a thin portion of water that flows right through the roots of the plants that have tight water passage. In this type of solution, the plants could easily grow since the roots of the plants could get the nutrients in the solution so easily as well as air considering that the water is shallow.

Aeroponics Solution

The continuous drenching of the roots of the plants with a thin stream or vapor of the solution containing all the essential nutrients to make plants grow comprises the aeroponics system. Because of this system, the plants have enough aeration.
