Long dresses might look lovely but how many people would actually associate them with leading females in media? Whether you're looking at a movie or a video game, the truth of the matter is that there are simply some ladies who take great pride in their fashion senses. Some of them will even wrestle in the attires that most people would go to dinner in. There are a few examples to name off and each of them has proven to be stylish yet effective.
One of the long dresses that Ada Wong, from the Resident Evil games, wears is one that originates from China. It's traditional in the sense of its designs but modern in the way that it manages to show just enough skin to still be tasteful. You might not think that Ada can operate well when combating zombie-like foes with this attire but her usability with firearms is one that cannot be questioned. These sorts of dresses are unique and it's due to that feature that fit companies the likes of Estelle's fit as well.
When talking about older dresses, you might want to look in the direction of royalty originating from the Mushroom Kingdom. Princess Peach may be the most common name and her pink, puffy dress is one that cannot be mistaken. Having said that, though, it's a dress that belongs to another era and it's one that seems to fit this damsel right. Sometimes an older style is wanted by some people, regardless of whether she needs to be rescued by Mario or not.
While there are certainly exceptions, I am of the belief that dresses and attitudes go hand in hand. For instance, "Boy Meets World" was a TV show depicting how children grew up and Topanga Lawrence was certainly the most unique. She had an infatuation with nature and the dresses that she wore definitely had a hipster mentality to them. Her nature-loving attitude seemed to calm down as she became older but times were tough for this girl, to put it lightly.
In realistic situations, dresses don't seem to have much function in physicality. However, other forms of media have said differently and Ada was clearly one of the bigger names to mention. Peach is also noteworthy, though for different reasons, and I don't think anyone can say differently on the matter.
