21 Warning Signs You Need More Information On Supplies

By Henry Danny

Without the benefits of ink and toner in a printer, any print job you try to do will result in nothing but a blank page. The differences between toner and ink cartridges may not be readily apparent, but that is no reason to assume that they are actually the same thing.

Toner and ink cartridges are different entities for a reason, and other than the simple ideas of function and construction, there is not too much that is similar about the two. By only looking at the design of the printer cartridge types, you might be led to believe that each of them is the same as the next.

For both types of cartridge, you will place the full cartridges into the appropriate spots on the printer; usually, there are two cartridges in a printer. One cartridge will be full of colored material, and one will be full of black. You'll find this to be the case in both ink cartridges and toner cartridges.

The differences lie in what the substance inside the cartridge is like, since ink is a liquid coloring agent and toner is a dry powder. The purpose of each substance will be the same regardless of whether the printing substance is wet like ink or dry like toner. The environment responds equally well to either type of print cartridge.

You'll probably have noticed by now that the names of the types of cartridge belie their style. Ink cartridges are only used in inkjet printers; toner cartridges can be found in laser printers. The most important concept to understand is that each printer type can only use its appropriate printer cartridge; for example, you could not use an ink cartridge in a laser printer. You simply cannot mix the two; any attempt to print with the wrong kind of cartridge will be met with failure.

As a side note, you can save money when your print cartridges run out, since each type of cartridge is able to be refilled instead of replaced.

We now reach the point in our consideration where you must decide what type of printer to buy. For the most part, laser printers and the cartridges in them are pretty expensive. Laser printers still sell quite well, though, since they produce documents faster and with better quality than inkjet printers; the toner cartridges also last much longer.

Still, inkjet printers are the more popular option for those who want to print at home. Either choice will be fine, though.
