4 Practical Tips: Architects

By Raymond Willaimson

Understanding the Function of Architects in London

In London, the economic activity can be astonishing. There are many financial firms, artistic pursuits, and other important economic entities. People will often ignore one aspect of the economy, though; construction always seems to get forgotten. Of course, walking by any construction site will reveal the workers who spend their time there, but many people don't think about those who work off-site.

When you see a building being built, you may wonder who it is that gets to actually plan the skyline of London; if so, you are thinking about the job of architect. If you're curious as to exactly what an architect does, this piece will demonstrate how they work.

Every constructed building will have had a planner, and almost all buildings in London were developed by London architects. Getting this done takes a lot of work. Before anything else can be done, the architect must make a survey of the land where the building will go. Once the site itself is surveyed, the architect will begin work on developing a blueprint for construction. This process needs the architect to accurately incorporate all the elements that the customer desires, but the architect needs to also apply the laws of physics to any designs she tries. Like all skilled artists, an architect in London will probably incorporate some personal addition to the building, which serves as her tag that will stay with the building throughout its life.

The blueprints will then be presented to the construction manager, who will have to figure out a way to implement the plans using the tools and crew he has. After this stage in the process, an architect will switch from an active planning role to a more passive supervision role. The architect is responsible for ensuring that the building that gets created will be as close to identical to the blueprints as possible, and that it continues to match up with the customer's wishes. A good architect will regularly visit the site of construction to evaluate the work of the site manager and crew and to ensure that the plans are being followed. If anything goes awry, the architect must figure out a way to correct the errors.

When the construction crews finish their work, the architect only needs to conduct a walk-through with the owner of the new building to give it a last inspection. If anything has differed from the customer's wishes, it is the architect's duty to explain what happened and whether or not it was intentional. Then, the architect knows that the newest building in London is a success.
