7 Largest Diamonds As Mined

By Daniel Anderson

I was checking the net to search a few sites when I came across images of diamonds owned by well-known individuals. These diamonds are placed in very beautiful settings. I checked out my own diamond engagement ring on my finger and smiled. I was bemused as I remembered the day my husband gave it to me on our engagement celebration. I was so happy at that time and I am still happily married to the same loving man. Decades after we tied the knot, he disclosed to me that he selected my ring from hundreds of unique diamond engagement rings of many merchants. I started to like and enjoy the diamond rings and necklaces he gave me and I treasured diamonds all the more.

I don't really care if the diamond is part of a ring, pendant, brooch, bracelet or some other type of setting. I just like to see the glimmering beauty of the diamond in it. Now, I am reading fascinating specifics of the seven biggest diamonds that have been minded. The largest in the world is none other than the Cullinan diamond. It had an astonishing weight of. It was Thomas Evan Powell who came upon the stone in 1905, and the diamond was named after Sir Thomas Cullinan. He was the one who owns Premier Mine in South Africa. Considering that technology was not very high tech at that time, Asscher Brothers cut the diamond. The resulting two stones, the Cullinan 1 (Great Star of Africa) and Cullinan 2 (Lesser Star of Africa) are now a part of UK's Crown Jewels.

The second biggest diamond is the Excelsior Diamond found by Kaffir, a miner, in June 1893 in Jagersfontein Mine located in South Africa. Regarded as the largest diamond before the Cullinan, the Excelsior weighed 970 carats. The third largest rough diamond is the Star of Sierra Leone found in February 1972 in the Diminco mine. Rumor has it that the Star of Sierra Leone is one of the 13 flawless diamonds that are cut from the original stone. The Star of Sierra Leone is in the form of a brooch.

The Incomparable Diamond, which was uncovered in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is the fourth biggest diamond. In its rough state, the stone weighed 890 carats. The 5th largest diamond is the Great Mogul Diamond, which was found around 1650 in southern India. It has a carat weight of 78.5 carats. Emir Jemla gave the diamond as a gift to Shah Jahan, Emperor of India at that time. Shah Jahan was the one who built the Taj Mahal for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Jean Baptiste Tavernier, a famous jeweler described the stone as "The stone is of the same form as if one cut an egg through the middle."

At 777 carats, the Millenium Star is the world's sixth biggest rough diamond. Steinmetz Diamond Group was accountable for cutting the stone. The gem was removed in 1990 from a excavation in the Mbuji-Mayi district in Zaire. De Beers is the current owner of the stone. The seventh largest rough diamond is the Golden Jubilee which was discovered in the Premier mine located in South Africa. It weighs 755.5 carats.
