Caring for a Tent

By Ronald Schwebach

While you are living in the forest, you won't have a better friend than your tent. Whether you are camping for recreation or because you are on some kind of personal expedition, the tent you carry will be your home away from home. When you are home, you are supposed to clean the floors and wash the counters, and similar tasks need to be done on the tent you live in. Cleaning a tent may seem confusing to some, and you should consult the advice in this piece to better understand the whole process.

One of the most important maintenance tasks you can do on your tent is to waterproof it. Use a specially-designed waterproofing chemical on the seams of the tent, and then you're done! This step is very important for preserving the condition of your tent in any sort of weather. The waterproofing substance wears off the seams every couple of months, so if you use your tent regularly you should develop some kind of maintenance schedule. Performing this task regularly will slowly transform it into a task that feels routine rather than a chore.

The exterior and interior of your tent should be cleaned at the end of your trip (before you pack your tent away). Dirt will inevitably build up inside your tent over the course of your adventure, and there is no sense in letting the dirt fester inside while it is packed up. Using a simple brush should typically be enough to remove most of the dirt. Removing the dust is quite easy if your tent include some kind of tiny dust door; most modern tents include this feature.

The small cavities on the outside of your tent will frequently become infested with dead leaves, sticks, and bugs, so you should take a few moments to also scrub down the exterior. This task shouldn't take too long, and it will do a world of good for your tent.

There are a couple of things to remember about packing your tent away that you should remember. First, you should never pack your tent away while it is still damp or wet. Your tent will end up smelling horrible due to the mildew you've allowed to accumulate.

Secondly, you may need to practice packing your tent a number of times before you are actually able to get it back into the bag. There is a sort of wizardry to getting the tent into its original bag that can only be learned over time.
