Learn The Options Of Monterey Bay Sailing

By Jennie Sandoval

Being out on the sea is the best form of relaxation. There are few things more lovely than Monterey Bay sailing. This is a sport that can be very affordable, it's safe, and it is accessible. People both young and old love to be out on the bay. To develop the skills, confidence, and experience one needs there are a variety of options available.

One way is through a sail club. They can be found on rivers, inland lakes, and coastal areas throughout the country. Boat ownership is not required to participate, some clubs will provide a boat or people who are looking for crew. Membership is not necessary to participate in the programs offered by the clubs.

Explore the different types of sailing available. Social sailing is non-competitive and is for those seeking a fun time. Cruising is a type of social sailing that involves an end destination. Racing involves a course in a competitive structure. There are different levels that range from introductory, or social, to serious international or national regattas. Ocean racing takes place off-shore and is one of the more popular styles.

Dress comfortably in casual clothes with non-slip, closed-toe shoes. A pair of shorts and a t-shirt are great, depending on the weather. Always bring a rain coat and dress in layers as the sea breeze can be cold. When on board a dinghy a wet suit is advised. Long hair should be worn in a ponytail and do not wear a lot of jewelry. It is best not to bring valuables, such a electronics, on board as they may get lost or damaged.

Racing can be fun after some basic skills are developed. This is the competitive side of the sport that involves charting a specific course and competing against others. The size of the race is determined by the event of the regatta and the club one is involved with. The fleet, or the boats in the race, participate at different levels either nationally or internationally. One can compete in a dinghy or a keelboat.

Less competitive, the keelboat is used in Twilight racing. As is indicated in the name, this type of race is held in the evenings on weeknights and in the summer on weekends. These races are normally about an hour and after there is a social component where the participants have a barbecue or a dinner together at the club. For those who do not own a boat they can participate as a crew member.

Dinghies offer people who are new to racing a chance to race with others who are also new to the sport. This gives people a chance to develop their skills and learn the basics of racing. The rules are not as strict and the emphasis is on having fun more than on winning.

Learning about the different boats that are available will be of great benefit in deciding the best fit. From an inexpensive dinghy to a yacht, one can find the perfect vessel for their needs and budget. Dinghies, powerboats, and keelboats are the major categories to choose from. No matter what size boat, Monterey Bay sailing guarantees a great time at sea.
