Hiking To Machu Picchu Is A Great Way To Create Unforgettable Memories

By Harriett Simington

Hiking to Machu Picchu on the Incan Trail in the country of Peru is a favorite activity of adventurous vacationers from across the globe. The hike usually takes anywhere from 3 to 5 days, but the exact time frame will depend on which starting point the hikers choose, and how fast they move. For safety and other reasons, the Peruvian government states that all hikers must take this excursion with a licensed tour group.

The municipality of Cuzco is typically where a Machu Picchu hiking exclusion begins. However, there are alternate trails that can be selected once the hikers start out. An example of a non-typical route that the group can choose is a long trip through the Andes Mountains of Peru to a particular ancient ancient Incan landmark called Choquequirao.

The Choquequirao trail can be completed in approximately 5 days, but it may take longer in certain instances. The timeframe is dependent upon how much the participants plan to see as they travel along. In addition, on this specific trail the hikers can choose from an easy or difficult terrain. This is another choice that is largely a matter of the hikers' individual preferences.

The Lares route is the easiest option a hiker can choose, and it casually follows the highway of the Sacred Valley. Participants can interact with locals along the way who live in rural Peruvian communities. Sightseeing on this trail offers diverse topography, including rivers, lagoons, valleys and hot springs. When the hike commences, the group members will find themselves in Ollantaytambo, a town from where they can catch a railway ride to the ancient Inca ruins.

The most widely used and traditional trail to Machu Picchu is taken from Cuzco and usually concludes at daybreak on the fourth day. Travelers who choose this direct route typically enjoy the spectacular sunrises that they see each morning, especially on the journey's final day when they enter the renowned Sun Gate. Because this is the most popular route among Peruvian hikers, it is wise to obtain one's permit several months in advance if this trail is his or her first choice.

Regardless of which trail a hiker decides to follow, the Peruvian Highlands are an outstanding area for such a journey. However, hikers who like to challenge themselves on steep trails should consider the Salkantay route for an especially breathtaking excursion. Being able to observe the picturesque ice covered mountains firsthand is an extraordinary experience. This is why those who prefer difficult trails should choose this route.

The Machu Picchu lodge trail is another alternative that travelers should not overlook. It is somewhat like the Lares route, except the hikers retire at night to a pleasant and rustic lodge, rather than setting up camp. This trail takes about 6 days to complete, as it is generally approached at a slower pace than is typically set on the other routes mentioned above.

The majority of excursions to Machu Picchu will require that one use traditional camping equipment. Therefore, travelers should plan on bringing a sleeping bag manufactured for severe temperatures, as the latter are sometimes experienced on the mountain at night. One will also have to navigate various campsites in the dark, making a headlamp a necessary item as well. Adequate drinking water must also be included in one's essentials. No matter which trail a person chooses, hiking to Machu Picchu will be an unforgettable journey.
