WETT trained professionals must abide by a code of ethics requiring professionalism in all aspects of their work. The installation and maintenance of wood burning appliances is not regulated in Canada. As a non-profit training and educational association, WETT does not oversee, nor is it responsible for, the workmanship of its members.
In Barrie Ontario in order to get insurance on a wood burning appliance you must have your appliance inspected by a WETT Certified Inspector. This will ensure that your fireplace, wood stove or pellet stove is properly installed and is not a danger to you and your family.
In Barrie Ontario every chimney must meet the requirements of the required ULC or CSA standard and also be installed in accordance with the manufactures instructions.
Except when certified for use with a specific chimney or venting system a solid fuel burning appliance shall be connected to a masonry chimney conforming to provincial regulations or, in the absence of such regulations the requirements of the National Building Code or use a Certified Factory Built chimney.
The chimney shall be capable of venting the products of combustion and shall be sized in accordance with appliance manufacturer's instructions. If the flue liner of a chimney meeting the requirements of Clause 5.2.1. of CSA must be repaired or reduced in cross-sectional area, a certified lining system, or materials in conformance with the National Building Code shall be used.
When a mechanical flue-gas exhauster is used, the chimney shall be capable of venting the flue gas produced when all the appliances not interlocked to prevent simultaneous firing are firing a their maximum rate at the same time and when the flue gas exhauster is operating.
If using a Breech Pipe is shall have one male end extending at least 50mm beyond the outer face of the chimney to allow for attachment of the flue pipe. The Breech pipe shall be constructed of Type 304 stainless at least 0.303 mm thick. The liner material shall meet the requirements of ULC Standard S635, Class III or the material shall be material equivalent in performance to either item.
The breech pipe must be securely fastened to the chimney and be made flush with the interior surface of the flue. It must also be properly sealed with the flue to prevent spillage of any flue gases.
If you are building a masonry fireplace or fireplace insert in your home you will require a building permit. The municipal inspector will want to see your footings, hearth and damper etc before you enclose fireplace with masonry or brick. A WETT inspection is only a visual inspection that is recognized by your insurance company.
