Dog Training Collars 101

By Geraldine Dimarco

Every person who has their own Fido at home wants at least one thing-to train their dog to be behaved and safe to bring out to society. Dog obedience training is the road to get them there. It is an essential task that we all must know about; and one of the tools that experts use in this are dog training collars.

The custom of using dog collars is a matter that many people are still on the fence about. For some, they think that dogs should remain free and unrestricted without neck belts holding them back. For others however, collars are a constructive and safe tool in educating the animal on what he needs to learn.

What are some of the things we know about dog collars? As aforementioned, these are helpful training implements several experts employ to correct certain potentially destructive traits, as well as accelerate the progress of the animal's development, training-wise. Many people can attest to the value of having these collars prevent their dogs from doing a lot of damage.

Before we can adequately pass judgment on these training implements, we must take the time to learn more about this. What are the special kinds of collars and what are the functions of each one of them? There are mainly four kinds of dog collars. These are the choke collars, the head collars, the pronged collars and the electronic collars. Choke collars are what experts utilize to train the animal for agility. Using these is not as challenging as some would think, and any novice pet owner will have little trouble using it.

Head collars serve to control the direction that canines take; and pronged collars are those for smaller people with bigger dogs-they will help manage the stronger and friskier dogs. On the other hand, electronic collars are what some people use on extremely challenging canines. It is never applied as a tool for punishment, only as a means to enhance training.

Understandably though, many individuals are not comfortable with electronic collars. It is entirely up to the owner and the parameters he establishes on his training.

Other than function, an important feature you must take note of in looking for dog training collars is how comfortable it will be for the animal. You must be able to insert two fingers easily in the collar to make certain it isn't too snug for the dog. Also, take care that the collar does not stay on for more than 8 hours. Otherwise, your dog may experience skin irritation and general discomfort.

So what's the decision on these doggie necklaces? As with everything concerning your dog-you must use your judgment regarding this. It is almost always different for every dog and only you know your own pet well enough. Dog obedience training is a must for every pet-do what you feel is right and enjoy an unbreakable bond with your best friend when you do.
