There Really Is Nothing On Earth Like The Koh Phangan Full Moon Party In Thailand

By Jordan Ebor Koh Phangan is a smaller island in southern Thailand, not far from the bigger and more popular, Koh Samui. The island is most famous for its monthly Full Moon Party. I have been lucky enough to be on Koh Phangan a few times when there was a full moon. The best times to go to Koh Phangan is probably December to March, but the Full Moon Party happens every month of the year. Koh Phangan is a place where travellers come to chill, relax and hang out at the many beaches. However, the place really comes alive during the Full Moon Party. I think it was December 2008 when I first went to Koh Phangan. I know it was a Christmas anyway and there just happened to be a full moon at the time. Wow, was this place a mind opener. My friend Chrissie and I had a blast out our first ever Koh Phangan Full Moon Party. The Full Moon Party happens at a place called Haad Rin Beach. This place is a really cool area in general and there are plenty of food and drink options here. It was here that I first tried authentic Thai cuisine. I was hooked from the first mouthful! There is plenty to see and do at the Full Moon Party and there are a number of street performers or buskers to keep you entertained. The music always pumping around the beach and thousands of people dance the night away. The most popular drink at the Full Moon Party is called a "bucket". I have got no idea what is in these buckets, but Chrissie and I shared one. If you're game, check out the fire rope jumping. I could explain it, but you're better off just checking it out for yourself! Koh Phangan has several hotels, hostels and resorts not far from Haad Rin Beach. I have always stayed at the Seaview Sunrise Resort, which is situated on one side of the Beach. I have never really found it an issue getting accommodation in Koh Phangan, but you might be better of making your booking in advance as there are several thousands of people going to be on the island for the Full Moon Party. The Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan is pretty easy to get to, but unfortunately there is no airport on Koh Phangan so you have to get there by ferry either from Surat Thani on the mainland or from Koh Samui, the island next door. The closest airport is actually on Koh Samui, so you can fly there and then get the ferry over the Koh Phangan. If you're on a budget there is a train or buses from Bangkok to Surat Thani, then just hop on the ferry out to Koh Phangan. If you're not into the independent travelling then a few tour groups operate tours to Koh Phangan for the Full Moon Party. Thailand's famous Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan became world famous after the Leonardo De Caprio, The Beach, and I have to admit that you really have to see it to understand what it is like. So make sure that the Koh Phangan Full Moon Party is on your to-do list when you next visit Thailand.
